WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE & WHY!

Who Qualifies for a Home Sleep Study?

We recommend home sleep studies for individuals who experience persistent sleep problems and are at risk for sleep apnea. If you are experiencing symptoms such as snoring, disrupted sleep, fatigue, daytime sleepiness, weight gain, high blood pressure, a home sleep study may be right for you. Additionally, a home sleep test is often used to track how effective treatment is while using an oral appliance for the treatment of sleep apnea and snoring.

Home sleep tests are generally performed on persons aged 16 and up; however, in some cases a home sleep study may be used on younger patients. If you are unsure if a home sleep study is right for you, schedule a consultation with our sleep experts and we can discuss your options.

Home Sleep Studies

What is a Home Sleep Study?

A home sleep study is a non-invasive test that monitors your sleep patterns, breathing, heart rate and oxygen level. During a home sleep test, you'll wear a small device that tracks your vital signs and records your sleep patterns throughout the night. Our sleep experts analyze the data collected during the study to identify the presence or severity of snoring and sleep apnea. (There are still NO home sleep tests available that can diagnose other sleep disorders at home yet. As soon as there is more comprehensive testing available, you can bet Sleepwatchers will provide that, too!)

When do I complete the Home Sleep Study?

If you choose to order a home sleep study kit, we will schedule your study for the most convenient night for you! First, we will schedule a call to discuss the best night to complete the study. We will obtain all of the necessary information during this call so that we can ship the device to your home right away.

After you have received the device in the mail, you will have a virtual appointment with a sleep technician to go over the instructions for use. During this appointment, we show you how to use the device and we can answer all of your questions to ensure that you have the most accurate and successful sleep study.

Once you've completed the study, you will package the device in the original box, apply the included return label, and schedule a pickup from USPS for return to us for analysis. Results are processed within 2 business days and made available to the patient immediately. We also include a virtual appointment with our sleep specialist to explain the results and answer all of your questions. Our comprehensive services will address all of your questions and all of your sleep needs!

Why would I need a Home Sleep Study?

Are you tired all the time? Do others tell you snore or stop breathing during your sleep? View the list of symptoms below to see if you might have sleep apnea:

  • Insomnia
  • Disrupted or non-refreshing sleep
  • Snoring
  • Stop breathing or gasping is sleep
  • Morning headaches
  • Dry mouth
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Weight gain
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty paying attention

Other factors that increase the risk of sleep apnea include:

  • Excess weight. Obesity significantly increases the risk of OSA. Fat deposits in your upper airway may obstruct your breathing.
  • Neck circumference. People with thicker necks sometimes have narrower airways.
  • A narrowed airway. You might have inherited a narrow throat. Enlarged tonsils or adenoids also can block the airway, especially in children.
  • Use of alcohol, sedatives or tranquilizers. These substances relax the muscles in your throat, which can worsen obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Smoking. Smokers are three times more likely to have obstructive sleep apnea than are people who've never smoked. Smoking can increase the amount of inflammation and fluid retention in the upper airway.
  • Nasal congestion. If you have trouble breathing through your nose — whether from an anatomical problem or allergies — you're more likely to develop obstructive sleep apnea.
  • Medical conditions. Congestive heart failure, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes are some of the conditions that increase the risk of obstructive sleep apnea. Polycystic ovary syndrome, hormonal disorders, prior stroke and chronic lung diseases such as asthma may also increase risk.
  • Being male. Men are 2 to 3 times more likely to have sleep apnea than are women. However, women increase their risk when overweight or after menopause.
  • Being older. Sleep apnea occurs more often in older adults.
  • Family history. Having family members with sleep apnea might increase your risk.

These are all symptoms of sleep apnea which can affect your overall health and quality of life! If you are experiencing two or more symptoms of sleep apnea, a home sleep study may be the next step.
